In 2012 am lansat publicatia bilingva Orasul posibil. In(ter)ventii in spatiul urban postcomunist / The Would be City. Interventions in the Post-communist Urban Space.

Anul acesta cartea a obtinut premiul 3 la concursul national de design de carte Cele mai frumoase carti din Romania. Cele 25 de carti nominalizate in concurs, si expuse intre 4-8 Noiembrie la UNAgaleria Bucuresti, vor reprezenta Romania in competitia internationala de design de carte Best Book Design from All Over the World – Targul de Carte de la Leipzig, 2014 și vor fi incluse în expozitiile organizate de Stiftung Buchkunst.

Va invitam sa o lecturati.

Cartea se poate găsi în lanțurile de librării Cărturești, Humanitas și Librariu, la Carol 53 în București, poate fi comandata direct la asociația PlusMinus și la editura Tact în Cluj-Napoca.

Influentele Episcopiei

In Romania organizarea administrativa a bisericii ortodoxe romane se prezinta astfel: mitropolii, arhiepiscopii, episcopii. Mai multe informatii pe wikipedia. La Galati – sediul Episcopiei Dunarea de Jos.

Ca si in alte orase, de Sf. Ioan Botezatorul tineri curajosi se arunca in apa inghetata sa prinda crucea. Multe scoli sau licee au Sfinti protectori si ii serbeaza cu fast in prezenta episcopului. Din 1994, dupa investirea in functie a episcopului Casian, la Galati au inceput a fi organizate in cadrul unui mare eveniment Sarbatorile Galatiului. Orasul il are protector pe Sf. Andrei. Frig, vant, ploaie, casutzele de lemn invadeaza cateva zone ale orasului. Si concertele cu artistii in voga. imagine de pe bulevardul central

Moreover many schools have patron saints and celebrate that special day , sharing the joy with the Low Danube church archbishop. Since 1994, when Casian was appointed archbishop, a series of events began ,events dedicated to St Andrew the patron saint of the town. Irrespective of the weather conditions, icy roads, strong winds or heavy snowfalls craftsmen from all over Romania set up their wooden cottages, tents, stalls and lure you to buy their handmade goods. Concerts in the open with famous singers and bands , fireworks ,a parade of national costumes are part of this feast.

Educatie universitara si preuniversitara

Galatiul are un centru universitar ce scolarizeaza in 2011 aproximativ 22.000 studenti. Orasul are aproximativ 290.000 locuitori. Studentii reprezinta una dintre cele mai mari categorii sociale din oras, dar acest lucru nu este la fel de vizibil ca in alte centre universitare.

Actuala Universitate Dunarea de Jos a fost infiintata in 1974 si are 16 facultati / aprox. 14.000 studenti in 46 domenii / studii master si scoli doctorale. Universitatea are o pozitie favorabila in Regiunea de dezvoltare Sud-Est, ca centru universitar de traditie aflat într-o zonă de frontieră geo-politică. Extensia universitatii – Facultatea Transfrontalieră din Cahul are caracter unic in tara. Pe langa aceasta universitate de stat, mai functioneaza universitatile particulare Danubius (7000 studenti) si Spiru Haret (900 studenti).
In oras exista doua tipuri de licee, teoretice si vocationale. Cele teoretice de renume reprezinta pepiniera pentru universitatile din tara, restul pentru cele din oras. Scolile galatene trimit elevi in strainatate, ori cu burse ori la munca. Liceele cu traditie din Galati  sunt mereu citate pentru numarul mare de elevi premiati la olimpiade sau participanti la diverse activitati conexe. Totusi orasul nu prezinta o infrastructura speciala adresata acestor elevi (alta decat spatiile scolilor).  In Colegiul National Vasile Alecsandri, cel mai vechi liceu din oras, tineretul e pregatit pentru a pleca din oras: 85% pleaca, 15% raman (situatie orientativa)



Galati is an university centre of about 22000 students in 2011. It has about 290000 inhabitants. The students represent one of the largest social categories of the town, but unfortunately their presence is not felt as in other towns.

The Low Danube University was set up in 1974 and it has 16 departments/around 14000 students in 46 domains/ master and doctoral schools. The University boasts a favourable position in the South–East development area, as an university centre with long lasting tradition in an area of geo political border. The branch of the University –the Trans -border Faculty/College in Cahul has a unique character in the country. Besides this state universities there are the Danubius University (about 7000 students) and the Spiru Haret University (about 900 students), both being private universities.

There are two kinds of high schools-theoretical and vocational. The famous theoretical high schools provide the best students for the Romanian as well as foreign universities. The vocational ones provide the Galati university with students. A great number of students graduating famous high schools study abroad and then work abroad. You can very often read or hear about students studying in the best high schools in Galati who won prizes in Olympiads or other similar activities. Unfortunately the town does not provide other facilities besides the school buildings themselves. The oldest high school in town, the Vasile Alecsandri High school provides his students with valuable knowledge that facilitates their admission to famous Universities both in Romania and abroad-85%, while 15%study in Galati.

Extrema SE

Galatiul este punct de frontieră cu Republica Moldova şi se afla la o distanţă de 8km de graniţa cu Ucraina.

Situat pe malul nordic al Dunării, ocupă o suprafață de 246,4 km2, la confluența râurilor Siret (la vest) și Prut (la est), lângă Lacul Brateș, la circa. 80 de kilometri de Marea Neagră. Regiunea face parte din rezervatia naturala Prutul de Jos, o continuare a biosferei Deltei. Cel mai apropiat oraș este Brăila, la doar 15 kilometri spre sud.

Orasul este situat intr-o zona cu seismicitate ridicata (8,5 grade), pe un relief dezvoltat pe loess si sensibil la fundare. In ciuda avantajelor amplasamentului exista probleme mari de ordin constructiv. Constructiile realizate dupa anii ’60 sunt sustinute de o retea densa de piloti.

South Eastern Extreme

Galati has common border with the Republic of Moldavia, being situated within 8 km from the border with Ukraine. Situated on the northern bank of the Danube, it covers an area of 246,4 square km, at the confluence of the Siret (to the West), the Prut (to the East) and Brates Lake, being within 80 km from the Black Sea. The area belongs to the natural Low Prut reservation, an extension of the delta biosphere.

Braila is the nearest town, 15 km southwards. The town is situated in an area of high seismic risk (8.5degrees) on a loess soil thus being very sensible at foundation. Despite having great advantages due to its position it is confronted with great construction problems. The buildings constructed after the‘60’s are supported by a big network of pillars.

Vrem Pod peste Dunare!

Vrem Pod peste Dunare! este unul din grafitiurile care a tot circulat prin oras. Alaturi de aceasta sintagma – discutia daca e mai bine sa se construiasca un pod in Galati sau mai bine in Braila. Se aduc argumente pro si contra.

In 1960, cu ocazia constructiei podului peste Dunare de la Giurgeni – Vadu Oii, au fost elaborate o serie de studii comparative cu posibile treceri permanente atat in Galati cat si in Braila. Tema a fost reluata cu diverse ocazii pana in 1990.

Lucrarea ce reuneste aceste studii* explica cum pentru rezolvarea circulatiei in tranzit spre Constanta, litoralul Marii Negre, delta Dunarii sau legatura cu drumuri europene spre Bulgaria si Turcia, s-a pus problema realizarii unor traversari permanente in Galati, Braila si Calarasi. Totusi, podurile peste Dunare trebuie sa reprezinte mai mult decat legatura intre cele doua maluri ale Dunarii. Acestea trebuie sa asigure dezvoltarea economica si sociala a municipiilor existente si in al doilea rand, imbunatatirea conditiilor de tranzit, care se desfasoara acum prin traversari nepermanente, influentate de conditiile atmosferice si limitate de serviciile de transbordare.

Bridge on the Danube

A bridge on the Danube is a must. We want a bridge! Is what many graffiti drawings plead for. We really want to know whether a bridge is a must. Shall it be built in Galati or Braila? There are pros and cons regarding its location.

In 1960 when a bridge on the Danube was built at Giurgeni-Vadu Oii , a series of comparative studies regarding the permanent crossing of the Danube in Galati or Braila were drawn up. The idea was dealt with on several occasions until 1990.

The study regarding these ideas was supposed to solve the in transit traffic to Constanta, the Black Sea coast and the Danube Delta or on the European roads to Bulgaria and Turkey. By having a permanent crossing point in Galati ,Braila or Calarasi.

The bridges on the Danube should be more than a means of connecting the two river banks .Firstly they should ensure the social and economic development of the two cities and secondly improve the in transit conditions , which are solved by temporary crossings that greatly depend on weather conditions and are limited by ferry services.

La nivel international, dezvoltarea urbana ia in calcul factori precum scaderea si imbatranirea populatiei, parasirea platformelor industriale si imagineaza chiar reducerea suprafetei oraselor. In Romania inca se discuta despre dezvoltarea zonelor periurbane in directia urbanizarii si maririi suprafetei intravilanului oraselor.

Sistemul urban Galati-Braila sau Braila-Galati este un subiect mult discutat in studii geografice / planificarea urbana la nivel national. Intradevar cele mai apropiate aglomeratii urbane din tara, orasele par sa fi ramas la viziunea de dezvoltare din perioada comunista*.

Extinderea si unirea morfologica a celor doua orase a inceput să prinda contur la nivel de proiect acum foarte multi ani. A fost propusa construirea de cartiere rezidentiale intre cele doua orase, construirea unui aeroport, etc. Declinul economic, evolutia demografica negativa, rivalitatea intre cele doua orase, problemele de constructie datorate solului au impiedicat si impiedica in continuare crearea unui organism functional. Costisitorul cartier Siret, inceput langa Galati, a demonstrat acest lucru.

Totusi, o viitoare zona metropolitana incluzand aceste orase este posibila. Datorita pozitiei periferice, dezvoltarea acesteia ar trebui sa tina cont de o colaborare transfrontaliera.


*”Dezvoltarea continua a municipiului resedinta de judet va permite apropierea acestuia de orasul vecin, Braila – aglomerari urbane ce vor putea fi legate cu o sosea, amplasata pe malul Dunarii, artera cu mai multe benzi, dotata cu trenuri de tramvaie, ce vor permite legatura foarte rapida intre cele doua municipii. Galati –Braila, Braila –Galati

At an international level urban development takes into consideration elements such as aging and shrinking of urban population, the abandonment of industrial platforms, as well as the dwindling of urban areas. In Romania we can still talk about the development of periurban areas in connection with the urbanization and enlargement of the inner city areas.

The Galatil-Braila or Braila –Galati urban system is a highly debated topic in the geographic/urban planning at national level. In fact the closest urban settlements in Romania , these two towns seem to have remained at the communist development vision.

The sprawl and morphologic joint of the two towns began to materialize as a project many years ago. They suggested building residential districts between the two towns ,a new airport, etc. The economic decline , the negative demographic evolution, the rivalry between the two towns, the construction problems faced because of the soil ,have prevented the creation of a functional body. The costly Siret district, erected within easy reach from Galati, has proved this.

However, we believe that having a metropolitan area including these two towns is still possible. Owing to its peripheric position, the development of this area should take into consideration the cooperation between the two counties.

“The continuous development of the town residence will allow it to draw near the neighbouring town, Braila.- highly populated urban areas that will be connected by a road on the Danube bank, a motorway with more lanes, with trains and trams, that will help get from one town to another in next to no time. A new industrial platform will be built between the two towns ,satellite working class towns. By reaching this target , in 2000 the urban area will have about 1000000 inhabitants, a human settlement that can be compared with other large towns on the Danube. (Romania’s Counties, 1980)

In anul 1954 s-a elaborat schita de sistematizare a centrului orasului Galati. Solutia propunea realizarea unui sistem de piete si esplanade care lega faleza cu cea mai veche strada rezidentiala a orasului (Republicii, azi Domneasca) si zona de vest a orasului cu zona portului. Ce s-a realizat respecta in mare masura aceasta schita.

In prezent, la nivel pietonal piata centrala nu este lizibila, spatiul fiind puternic plantat si mobilat. Acest lucru nu constitue o schimbare negativa fata de planul initial, intrucat zona pare o oaza verde in mijlocul orasului, iar mobilierul specific anilor ’80 are un farmec aparte. In schimb, in zona hotelurilor centrale amenajarile nu este valorificat potentialul spatiului. Precum in centrele altor orase dezvoltate si amenajate in comunism, accentul a fost pus pe realizarea unor modele decorative din gresie, desen de plan vizibil doar de la etaje superioare ale cladirilor. Dupa unii arhitecti, amenajare recunoscuta si demna de pastrat. Aceste spatii devin foarte aride si neprimitoare vara si prin urmare nefolosite.

Mai mult, goana dupa suprafete inchise a adosat acestui hotel cutii de plastic si sticla. Un gand adresat proprietarilor hotelului Dunarea: Privind o imagine de la 1965 mesajul ar fi: ne putem intoarce la zero? Posibil, reversibil.

 

Back to scratch !?
In 1954 the planning layout of Galati city centre was elaborated. The solution proposed the development of a system of squares and esplanades connecting the Danube cliffs with the oldest residential street in the city (Republicii, nowadays Domneasca) and the western part of the city with the port area. What was built then complied to a large extent with this layout.

Today, the central square is not readable at walking level, as the space is highly planted and furnished. This is not a negative change compared to the initial plan, given that the area looks like a green oasis in the middle of the city and the ’80 outdoor furniture has a special allure. On the other hand, the potential of the area around the city-central hotels is not capitalized. As in other centers of cities developed and planned during the Communist period, the focus was on making sandstone decorative patterns, plain design which is visible only from higher building floors. According to some architects, this is definitely a keeper, which is even praised. These spaces become very dry and unwelcoming and therefore remain unused.

Moreover, the rush for closed surfaces has joined plastic and glass boxes to this hotel. Here’s a thought to the owners of Dunarea hotel: Looking at a photo from 1965, the message would be: can we go back to scratch? Possibily, reversible.

Strada domneasca – o zona istorica pastrata, partial intretinuta, partial abandonata, partial restructurata. Cu toate acestea, fiind cel mai plantat bulevard al orasului, ramane cel mai circulat pentru promenada dupa faleza. Din functiunile publice care atrageau altadata publicul, parte s-au inchis (gradina de vara, 2 cinematografe), altele sunt parasite sau transformate in cluburi. Altele sutin in continuare potentialul bulevardului (universitate, teatru, prefectura).

Zona gara-autogara, adiacenta acestu ax, e in plin proces de reorganizare (ANL, noua gara, mall….). Gradina publica si parcul Rizer – zone cu un potential extraordinar, necesita amenajare si dotare. In segmentul final al strazii nu s-a mai tinut cont de caracterul istoric al strazii in interventiile recente (praktiker!).

Nostalgie, si ce a fost orasul odata prezentate intr-un proiect cultural realizat in 2010. Istoria catorva cladiri care sustin coloana vertebrala a zonei istorice si alte informatii: Rendez-vous cu Galatii de altadata.


“Galatii of times past”

Domneasca Street – preserved historic area, partially take care of, partially abandoned, partially reorganized. In spite of all, it is still the second most popular site for promenade after the Danube cliffs, being also the greenest boulevard in the city. Out of the public functions that used to attract the public in times past, some closed (the summer theatre, 2 cinemas), some have been abandoned or transformed into clubs. Others still support the area’s potential (the university, the theatre, the prefecture).

The train station – bus terminal area, adjacent to this axis, is in full reorganization process (ANL, new train station, the mall…). The public garden and the Rizer park – areas with an extraordinary potential, require management and furnishing. On the final segment of the street, the historic character was totally disregarded in recent interventions (praktiker!).

In anii ’60 se schimba radical profilul industrial al orasului Galati prin noi unitati industriale in teritoriu, noi ramuri industriale dar in pricipal datorita noului combinat siderurgic. Inceput in 1962 in partea de vest a orasului, CS Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, urma sa devina doar dupa cativa ani un simbol al socialismului. 1967:  156.000 de locuitori in oras, 73.000 de angajați la combinat. In anii ’80 sectorul siderurgic Galati avea un record de 60% din productia tarii. Orasul se estima sa ajunga in anul 2000 la 500 000 locuitori. Pentru a deservi platforma industriala au fost construite intr-o perioada de aprox. 30ani toate cartierele de blocuri ale orasului (muncitori – Tiglina, Dunarea, Aeroport /specialistii straini adusi in perioada executiei santierului – Tiglina 1). Planul initial era prevazut cu o zona de protectie (padure). Acest plan a fost abandonat, suprafeta paltformei marindu-se.

Industry and habitation

In the ‘60s the industrial profile of Galati was completely changed, with the addition of new industrial sites in the territory, new industries but above all because of the new steel plant. Started in 1962 in the western part of the city, Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej steel plant would become within only a few years a symbol of socialism. 1967: 156.000 city, 73.000 employees in the plant. In the ‘80s, the steel sector in Galati held a record of 60% of the country’s production. It was estimated that in 2000 the city would reach 500 000 inhabitants. In order to support the industrial platform, all of the city’s neighborhoods were built in approximately 30 years (workers’ neighborhoods – Tiglina, Dunarea, Airport / foreign specialists brought during the building site execution – Tiglina 1). The initial plan was provided with a buffer zone (forest). This plan was abandoned and the platform area increased.

The city’s most dense built areas situation in the immediate vicinity of the industrial area / there are no green buffer areas / Catiusa moor is used to dispose of wastes / the steel plant is constantly expending the affected area through slag pits and other wastes pits / it is still the main steel manufacturer in Eastern Europe / it pays dozens of fines for failure to comply with pollution standards and has no intention of improving the situation / it is partially functional and does not manufacture high quality products / received utilities allowances but cuts staff … 2010: 290.000 inhabitants, 9.000 employees in the steel plant. 2020, whereto?
